Deeply Engaging in the Frontier of Contaminant Transport Numerical Simulation

From June 23 to 27, 2026, the Short-Term Training Course on Reactive Transport Simulation of Contaminants, organized by the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and the National Key Laboratory of Soil Pollution Control and Safety, and jointly hosted by the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of SUSTech and AIMOLI (Hebei) Technology Co., Ltd., was successfully launched at Room 804, North Building of the College of Engineering, SUSTech. The five-day systematic advanced training program was successfully completed.

Relying on AIMOLI’s overseas expert introduction resources, this training successfully brought together four internationally renowned hydrogeological modeling experts to deliver lectures in China. It attracted 35 industry professionals from 17 universities, research institutes, environmental protection enterprises, and institutions across China, establishing an international and professional learning and exchange platform in the field of groundwater reactive transport simulation, and effectively bridging the gap between overseas cutting-edge technologies and domestic industry applications.

The domestic field of groundwater reactive transport simulation has long faced challenges including lagging frontier technologies, limited international resources, shortages of high-level experts, and disconnection between engineering modeling and international standards. Many advanced coupled simulation technologies, original modeling software, and international cutting-edge research achievements have been difficult to rapidly apply in domestic scientific research and engineering scenarios.

To overcome technical bottlenecks in the industry and address the internationalization gap in domestic numerical simulation, AIMOLI (Hebei) Technology Co., Ltd. and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of SUSTech jointly coordinated the introduction of four internationally leading foreign experts to China for lectures. AIMOLI was fully responsible for key tasks including expert invitation, curriculum system coordination, and the implementation of China-foreign technical exchanges, providing essential expert support for the internationalization and professional quality of this advanced training program.

The invited experts specially introduced by AIMOLI are all leading scholars in the fields of global groundwater pollution simulation and geochemical modeling. They cover four major areas: original model development, internationally recognized scientific research, engineering modeling tool development, and interdisciplinary frontier research. The level of the teaching team is comparable to that of top international academic conferences:

Professor Henning Prommer (The University of Western Australia): Original developer of the classic reactive transport model PHT3D, with extensive research experience in coupled groundwater geochemical simulation and numerical analysis of artificial recharge. He is one of the pioneers in the field of reactive transport simulation worldwide.
  2. Dr. Douglas Kent (United States Geological Survey, Emeritus Hydrogeologist): A leading authority in geochemical modeling of water-rock interactions and a key contributor to surface complexation reactions of metals/metalloids. His research achievements are widely cited in global industry modeling applications.
  3. Dr. Pablo Ortega Tong (Intera Inc.): Independently developed the Python-based reactive transport modeling tool MF6RTM and has extensive experience in contaminant fate and transport simulation at contaminated sites, providing core technical support for international water resources and mining environmental protection fields.
  4. Associate Professor Paula Rodríguez-Escales (Polytechnic University of Catalonia): An expert in interdisciplinary research integrating hydrogeology, environmental chemistry, and biogeochemistry, focusing on frontier studies of emerging contaminants and antibiotic resistance gene migration mechanisms in groundwater.

This training truly enabled face-to-face teaching by the developers of internationally original technologies, allowing domestic participants to directly communicate with model source code authors and scholars involved in developing international industry standards.

Participants gained direct access to the world’s leading modeling theories, original software operation principles, and international engineering implementation experience, completely breaking through the limitations of “learning second-hand tutorials, using outdated technologies, and lacking expert guidance.”

At the same time, AIMOLI collaborated with overseas academic communities to further enrich the international academic dimension of this training.

The course innovatively adopted a three-dimensional teaching model combining theory + code programming + software practice. Foreign experts provided full-course guidance, analyzed modeling challenges through international classic cases, and delivered training aligned with international cutting-edge technical standards.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Zheng Yan, Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at SUSTech, highly recognized AIMOLI’s overseas expert introduction efforts and China-foreign technology empowerment initiatives. She stated that the domestic soil and groundwater pollution prevention and control industry is currently in urgent need of interdisciplinary professionals who master international frontier reactive transport simulation technologies. Numerical simulation is a core supporting tool for pollution source tracing, risk assessment, and remediation plan design. She encouraged trainees to value this high-quality learning opportunity created through international collaboration, strengthen theoretical foundations, improve practical skills, and connect with international standards.

Experts highly recognized the AML920 Groundwater Flow Velocity and Direction Meter for its single-well in-situ monitoring capability of groundwater flow velocity and direction. Based on years of groundwater hydrogeological research and engineering experience, the four international experts conducted specialized technical discussions and professional guidance on the development of groundwater pollution transport analysis instruments based on hydraulic fields and water quality indicators.

They also provided targeted and international-oriented optimization suggestions regarding field condition adaptability, data accuracy improvement, integration of pollution transport data modeling with simulation software such as MODFLOW and PHT3D, and equipment upgrades for different contaminated site scenarios.

The specialized guidance from overseas experts provided important international technical support for AIMOLI’s continuous upgrading of groundwater sampling, monitoring, and analysis equipment, as well as the realization of a closed-loop technology system integrating “monitoring data + numerical simulation.” It further promoted the alignment of AIMOLI groundwater sampling, monitoring, and analysis equipment with international frontier modeling technologies and global engineering standards.
