An AML921 Case Study

1. The Customer’s Challenge: Blurry Images After Passing Through an Oil Layer in a 300-Meter-Deep Well

Last week, we received an email from Michele, a customer from Italy.

Michele is a project manager at a third-party service company. He was working on a subsurface well inspection project for a mineral exploration site when he encountered a difficult problem: the well was approximately 300 meters deep and contained an oil layer. When using their existing borehole camera, the images became blurry after the probe passed through the oil layer, making it impossible to clearly observe the well walls and bottom.

For an underground inspection project, lowering a camera to the required depth does not necessarily mean the inspection can be completed successfully.

If the probe cannot capture identifiable images after reaching the target area, field personnel may struggle to determine whether cracks, damage, or other abnormalities exist along the well walls. They may also be unable to accurately document the actual condition of the well bottom. Even if a deployment is completed, the lack of usable images may prevent the team from reaching reliable inspection conclusions.

This can reduce inspection efficiency and increase the time required for repeated deployments, equipment adjustments, and on-site operations.

Michele wanted to find a borehole camera system that could operate in deep wells while addressing the challenges of optical imaging in oil-bearing environments. He contacted us because he had previously seen our case studies involving similar complex working conditions.

Based on his description, we identified three key issues that needed to be addressed:

Image usability in oil-bearing environments: Can the camera continue to capture clear, identifiable images after the probe passes through the oil layer?

Equipment suitability for a 300-meter-deep well: Can the probe’s pressure resistance, cable length, and signal transmission system meet the site requirements?

Traceability of inspection results: Can the images be recorded alongside depth information to support subsequent analysis and engineering assessments?

These three factors were the main considerations in evaluating whether the AML921 borehole camera was suitable for Michele’s project.

2. Why Can a Borehole Camera Produce Blurry Images After Passing Through an Oil Layer?

Before discussing equipment selection, it is important to understand the technical challenge the customer encountered.

A borehole camera is an inspection device that uses an optical imaging system to observe conditions inside a well. Compared with methods that provide only indirect measurement data, it can offer field personnel visual images of the well walls, well bottom, and other visible areas.

However, optical imaging depends on a basic requirement: the imaging system must receive sufficient usable light, and there must be no severe contamination or obstruction between the lens and the target that would compromise image quality.

In oil-bearing wells, these conditions may be disrupted.

1. Oil Film Contamination Can Affect Camera Imaging

When the probe of a borehole camera passes through an oil layer, oil may adhere to the lens or protective window, forming a film that interferes with imaging.

This film can alter light transmission and reflection, reducing image contrast and blurring details. In severe cases, the well walls and bottom may become difficult to identify.

Oil, water, suspended particles, and other impurities inside the well may also affect image quality. Different oil types vary in viscosity, wax content, sand content, and other characteristics, so the actual impact cannot be generalized across all applications.

Therefore, the challenge of inspecting oil-bearing wells is not simply whether the borehole camera can operate, but whether its optical system can continue to provide usable inspection images after passing through the oil layer.

It is important to note that corrosion-resistant materials such as 316L stainless steel primarily address the material suitability of the probe structure. They do not automatically make the lens resistant to oil contamination. Material compatibility, lens protection, sealing design, and actual imaging performance must be evaluated according to the specific working conditions.

2. Conventional Borehole Cameras May Not Be Suitable for Every Oil-Bearing Application

Different types of borehole cameras have different designs and operating ranges. Some are primarily intended for clear-water wells, groundwater wells, or other environments that are relatively suitable for optical observation. When the operating medium changes, the original configuration may no longer meet the requirements.

This is why selecting a camera for an oil-bearing well should not be based solely on individual specifications such as camera resolution or probe diameter.

If the lens is easily contaminated by the surrounding medium, even a high-resolution camera cannot guarantee clear images.

For Michele’s project, our first consideration was whether the equipment could accommodate the actual medium, rather than simply pursuing higher camera specifications.

3. Inspecting a 300-Meter-Deep Well Also Requires Reliable Cable and Signal Transmission

In addition to the oil-bearing environment, well depth is another important factor when selecting a borehole camera.

For a well approximately 300 meters deep, the equipment must meet requirements related to probe pressure resistance, cable length, mechanical load capacity, and signal transmission.

1. Cable Length Is Not the Only Consideration

Borehole cameras are generally connected to ground-based control equipment through a cable. As the deployment depth increases, the required cable length also increases.

The cable structure, conductor characteristics, connection method, and transmission technology all affect system performance over long distances.

If an analog video transmission system that is sensitive to transmission distance is used, long-distance transmission may result in signal attenuation and image distortion. Electromagnetic interference at the site may also affect image quality in some systems.

Therefore, inspecting a 300-meter-deep well is not as simple as purchasing a 300-meter cable and assuming the borehole camera will operate properly.

The cable’s load capacity, transmission performance, connection reliability, and compatibility with the complete system must also be confirmed.

2. Digital Transmission Can Help Improve Long-Distance Image Transmission

For deep-well borehole cameras, digital transmission can reduce the continuous signal attenuation and distortion commonly associated with traditional analog video transmission.

However, this does not mean digital transmission is completely immune to signal problems under all conditions. Actual performance still depends on the encoding and transmission architecture, cable configuration, connection quality, and electromagnetic environment at the site.

When evaluating a deep-well camera system, it is therefore important to understand the transmission technology used and whether the system has been verified at the intended operating depth, rather than relying solely on a product description that states “digital transmission.”

3. Probe Pressure Resistance and Cable Configuration Must Be Verified Separately

Deep-well equipment must also withstand water pressure, the weight of the cable, and mechanical loads during deployment and retrieval.

A probe that can withstand the required pressure does not mean that every cable can be used at the same depth. Likewise, a cable of sufficient length does not guarantee that the probe and complete borehole camera system are suitable for deep-well operations.

For Michele’s 300-meter-deep well project, we needed to consider the probe’s pressure-resistant design, cable specifications, connection structure, and signal transmission capabilities together.

This is an often-overlooked aspect of deep-well camera selection: the operating depth must be supported by the configuration of the entire system, not just the specifications of an individual component.

4. What Two Key Factors Did We Consider for Michele’s Project?

Based on the working conditions described by the customer, we focused on two areas when evaluating the AML921 borehole camera: its suitability for deep-well operations and its imaging performance in oil-bearing environments.

1. Deep-Well Inspection: The AML921 Has a Rated Working Depth of 500 Meters

The AML921 has a specified working depth of 500 meters, with the probe’s pressure resistance and cable configuration designed for deep-well conditions.

Based on its specified working depth, a well approximately 300 meters deep falls within its stated operating range. However, this does not mean every standard configuration can be used directly for the inspection.

The AML921 comes with a standard cable length of 100 meters. Therefore, Michele’s project would require a cable customized to the actual well depth, along with confirmation that the probe, cable, and connection components are compatible.

In terms of signal transmission, the AML921 uses a digital transmission system designed to improve signal attenuation and image distortion associated with long-distance video transmission.

For this type of deep-well project, we focus not only on whether the borehole camera can reach 300 meters, but also on whether ground-based operators can continue receiving usable images once the probe reaches the target depth.

2. Oil-Bearing Environments: Optical and Sealing Designs Require Particular Attention

The presence of oil is the key factor that distinguishes this project from conventional water-well inspections.

For these applications, the AML921 probe incorporates corresponding considerations in its optical and sealing designs to accommodate observations in complex downhole environments.

However, the composition, viscosity, wax content, and sand content of oil can vary considerably between projects. Whether the camera can consistently capture clear images in a particular oil type must therefore be evaluated according to the specific characteristics of the medium.

When assessing such applications, we do not conclude that the equipment is automatically suitable based solely on the probe material or protection rating. The actual site conditions must also be understood.

Our previous experience supporting similar complex operating conditions was also one reason Michele contacted us. For oil-bearing deep-well inspections, it is important to look beyond product specifications and understand how the equipment has performed in comparable environments.

The focus of this evaluation was to match the equipment’s operating depth, transmission system, and optical design to the customer’s actual requirements, rather than simply recommending a borehole camera with higher specifications.

5. Key Specifications and Configuration of the AML921 Borehole Camera

The following table summarizes the main specifications of the AML921. For a 300-meter-deep well, particular attention should be paid to the difference between the specified working depth and the standard cable length.

Item

AML921 Specifications

Working depth

500 meters

Probe material

316L stainless steel

Probe diameter

≤50 mm

Protection rating

IP68

Operating temperature range

-25°C to 60°C

Specified turbidity tolerance

50 NTU

Camera configuration

Downward-facing camera + 360° panoramic camera

Standard cable length

100 meters; customizable according to well depth

Cable type

Composite cable with meter markings

Imaging functions

Video recording and export; assessment reports with depth scales can be generated

Note: The specifications above are based on the product information provided. The actual purchasing configuration, operating pressure, media compatibility, and customized cable requirements should be confirmed against the product’s technical documentation, actual configuration, and project requirements. IP68 is a protection rating and cannot, by itself, establish that the equipment can operate at a water depth of 500 meters.

How Do These Design Features Help During Inspections?

Dual cameras: Observing both the well bottom and the well walls.

The AML921 combines a downward-facing camera with a 360° panoramic camera. The downward-facing camera is primarily used to observe the well bottom, while the panoramic camera is used to observe the surrounding well walls.

This dual-view design helps field personnel obtain images from different directions, potentially reducing the need for additional operations caused by insufficient viewing angles.

The actual observable area still depends on the well’s internal dimensions, lighting conditions, medium transparency, and inspection method.

Cable with meter markings: Linking images to downhole depth.

During a well inspection, capturing an abnormality is not enough. It is also necessary to determine the depth at which it occurs.

A cable with meter markings provides a visual reference for the probe’s deployment depth. When combined with image records, it helps field personnel locate abnormalities along the well walls, document the well bottom, and support subsequent inspections.

It should be noted that meter markings provide a depth reference. Actual measurement accuracy also depends on cable calibration, deployment conditions, and operating procedures.

Video recording and export: Supporting subsequent review.

Downhole images can be used for on-site assessment and reviewed after the operation has been completed. The ability to record and export images and generate assessment reports with depth scales helps preserve inspection records.

For third-party inspection service companies, these records can also help explain inspection locations, observed conditions, and areas requiring further investigation to other project stakeholders.

6. What Problems Can the AML921 Borehole Camera Help Address?

Based on the conditions described by Michele, the customer’s requirements and the corresponding equipment considerations can be summarized as follows.

Customer Challenge

Corresponding Solution Approach

Items Requiring Confirmation

Images become blurry after the probe passes through an oil layer

Evaluate the optical system, lens protection, and compatibility with the medium

Oil characteristics, lens contamination, and actual imaging performance

Well depth is approximately 300 meters

Configure the equipment for the target depth

Probe pressure resistance, cable specifications, and connection components

Long-distance transmission may affect image quality

Use digital transmission to reduce attenuation and distortion associated with traditional analog transmission

Actual transmission architecture, cable configuration, and site interference

Both the well walls and bottom need to be observed

Use downward-facing and 360° panoramic cameras to capture images from different directions

Internal well dimensions, lighting conditions, and visible range

Abnormalities need to be located by depth

Use a cable with meter markings alongside image records

Depth calibration and on-site operating accuracy

Inspection evidence needs to be retained

Record and export images and generate assessment reports with depth scales

Report format and the customer’s documentation requirements

For a third-party service company like Michele’s, the value of equipment selection lies not only in completing a single deployment, but also in obtaining useful images, reducing the possibility of repeated operations, and providing more complete records for subsequent engineering assessments.

It is important to emphasize that the above is a technical suitability assessment based on the working conditions described by the customer. It does not mean that on-site testing or delivery acceptance has already been completed for this project.

7. What Should Be Confirmed Before Purchasing a Borehole Camera for Oil-Bearing Deep Wells?

Equipment selection for complex operating conditions requires a clear understanding of both the applicable conditions and the limitations.

1. The Standard Cable Is Only 100 Meters Long, So a 300-Meter Well Requires a Customized Cable

The AML921’s standard cable length is 100 meters, which is insufficient for deployment in a 300-meter-deep well.

Before purchasing, the target well depth should be specified, and the customized cable length, mechanical load capacity, transmission performance, and connection configuration should be confirmed. For deep-well applications, the operating depth and pressure requirements of the complete system must also be verified.

2. Oil-Bearing Media Require a Specific Compatibility Assessment

Different oils can have significantly different physical properties. In addition to viscosity and wax content, it is important to determine whether the medium contains sand particles, other suspended solids, or potentially corrosive substances.

These factors may affect lens contamination, viewing distance, sealing reliability, and material suitability.

We therefore recommend providing as much information about the medium as possible before equipment selection. For unusual oil types, material compatibility and actual imaging performance should be confirmed, with targeted testing arranged if necessary.

3. Well Turbidity Affects the Level of Visible Detail

The AML921 has a specified turbidity tolerance of 50 NTU. However, this value should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the camera will produce equally clear images in every medium containing suspended particles at a turbidity level of 50 NTU.

Turbidity is only one factor affecting optical imaging. The size, color, and distribution of suspended particles, as well as lighting and viewing distance, can also influence the resulting images.

If site conditions permit, necessary well cleaning can be carried out before inspection, and suspended particles can be controlled as appropriate to improve viewing conditions.

4. The Protection Rating Does Not Establish Pressure Resistance Under All Conditions

IP68 is primarily used to indicate the dust and water ingress protection rating of an equipment enclosure. The specific test conditions must be confirmed in the manufacturer’s technical documentation.

For wells 300 meters deep or more, the probe’s rated operating pressure, sealing structure, and the complete system’s applicable operating depth must be verified. The IP68 marking alone cannot establish whether the equipment can withstand the corresponding water pressure.

Similarly, the material properties of 316L stainless steel do not replace compatibility testing for the specific oil involved.

5. A Borehole Camera Cannot Replace Core Analysis

A borehole camera primarily provides visual images and is suitable for observing visible macro-scale features such as well-wall structures, fractures, fractured zones, and conditions at the well bottom.

However, it cannot directly determine the chemical composition of minerals, complete rock mechanical parameters, or other data that require laboratory analysis.

If a project requires mineral identification, rock strength testing, or more detailed geological analysis, core sampling, logging, or other appropriate inspection methods should also be considered.

6. Confirm Actual Suitability Before Using the Equipment in Complex Conditions

For applications involving oil-bearing media, deep wells, high pressure, or high turbidity, we recommend providing the target well depth, medium characteristics, well diameter, temperature, pressure, and inspection objectives before purchasing.

Once the equipment configuration has been reviewed against this information, it can be determined whether a customized cable, material compatibility assessment, or field testing is necessary.

This helps reduce the risk of discovering configuration mismatches after the equipment arrives and supports more informed purchasing decisions.

8. FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Borehole Cameras for Oil-Bearing Deep Wells

Q1: Can a borehole camera be used to inspect oil-bearing wells?

It can be evaluated for this application, but not all borehole cameras are suitable for oil-bearing environments.

Oil may adhere to the lens or protective window, reducing image contrast and blurring details. When selecting equipment, it is important to confirm the optical system, lens protection, sealing design, and compatibility of the materials with the specific oil.

For wells containing complex oil compositions or substantial suspended solids, we recommend providing the medium’s characteristics in advance and confirming actual imaging performance.

Q2: Can the AML921 borehole camera inspect a well that is 300 meters deep?

The AML921 has a specified working depth of 500 meters. Based on this specification, a 300-meter-deep well falls within its stated working-depth range.

However, the standard cable is 100 meters long, so a customized cable is required for a 300-meter well. Before operation, the probe’s pressure resistance, cable load capacity, connection structure, and complete system configuration must also be confirmed against the actual working conditions.

Q3: Why might a borehole camera produce blurry images or interference in a deep well?

Possible causes include signal attenuation during long-distance transmission, incompatible cables or connections, electromagnetic interference at the site, and optical imaging problems caused by the downhole medium.

Signal transmission problems and lens contamination are different issues and should be investigated separately. Digital transmission can help improve certain long-distance transmission problems, but it cannot eliminate oil films, turbid media, or other optical obstructions.

Q4: What is the purpose of the AML921’s dual-camera configuration?

The AML921 combines a downward-facing camera with a 360° panoramic camera.

The downward-facing camera is primarily used to observe the well bottom, while the 360° panoramic camera is used to observe the surrounding well walls. These complementary views help field personnel obtain a more comprehensive visual understanding of the observable areas.

Actual imaging performance remains dependent on the well’s internal dimensions, lighting, and medium conditions.

Q5: What problems can a borehole camera identify?

When image clarity and visibility are sufficient, a borehole camera can be used to observe visible conditions such as fractures, damage, localized structural abnormalities along the well walls, and objects at the well bottom. Its specific capabilities depend on the equipment configuration and project requirements.

In oil and gas well applications, borehole cameras may also be used for tubing inspections, object identification, and other downhole visual inspection tasks. However, different tasks may require different equipment structures and technical configurations.

A borehole camera cannot independently replace core analysis, mineral identification, or all types of geological measurements.

Q6: Does an IP68 rating mean a borehole camera can operate at a water depth of 500 meters?

No. This cannot be determined from the IP68 rating alone.

IP68 indicates dust and water ingress protection. The specific test depth, duration, and conditions should be confirmed in the manufacturer’s documentation. Whether the equipment can operate at a depth of 500 meters depends on the probe’s rated pressure, sealing structure, and the specified working depth of the complete system.

For deep-well equipment, the protection rating and pressure resistance are two separate specifications that must be verified.

Q7: What information should be provided when purchasing a borehole camera for a 300-meter-deep well?

We recommend providing at least the following information:

Target well depth and well diameter.

Type of downhole medium, including oil, water, and other known components.

Known oil characteristics, such as viscosity, wax content, and sand content.

Downhole temperature, pressure, and other special operating conditions.

Main inspection objectives, such as observing the well walls, well bottom, or visible abnormalities.

Whether video recording, depth positioning, and inspection reports are required.

The more complete the information, the easier it is for the supplier to determine whether the probe, cable, and transmission system are suitable for the application.

9. Conclusion: The Key to Deep-Well Inspection Is Matching the Borehole Camera to Real Operating Conditions

Michele’s email reminded me once again that a seemingly simple imaging problem in a complex downhole inspection project may involve multiple factors, including optical design, medium characteristics, cable transmission, and deep-well pressure resistance.

Getting the probe down to the bottom of a well is only the first step. For a well approximately 300 meters deep with an oil layer, the real challenge is whether the equipment can capture usable images under the actual operating conditions and preserve reliable records for subsequent assessment.

The AML921 borehole camera offers a specified working depth of 500 meters, a digital transmission system, downward-facing and 360° panoramic cameras, and a customizable composite cable with meter markings. These features provide a basis for evaluating equipment configurations for this type of project.

However, we also recognize that product specifications cannot replace field verification. In particular, oil characteristics, lens contamination, and actual viewing conditions must be confirmed in advance.

If you are looking for a borehole camera for 300-meter-deep well inspections, oil-bearing well observation, or complex downhole inspection projects, you are welcome to provide us with the well depth, medium type, and inspection objectives. We can assess the suitability of the AML921 for the specific operating conditions and help confirm the required probe, cable, and other configurations.

Our goal is not simply to recommend a piece of equipment, but to help customers understand before purchasing what the equipment can address, what configuration is required, and which conditions must be verified in advance.

Description: Learn about the challenges of inspecting 300-meter-deep oil-bearing wells and how the AML921 Downhole Camera addresses working depth, digital transmission, dual-camera imaging, and cable configuration.
