Why Did the Customer Need a Bladder Pump Urgently?

Recently, Mr. Chen from an environmental monitoring station in Guangxi, China, contacted us.

He was working on an urgent groundwater monitoring project and needed a bladder pump groundwater sampling system for VOCs sampling.

For environmental monitoring organizations, equipment selection is not simply about comparing product specifications. When a project has a tight schedule, whether the sampling equipment can operate reliably under actual well conditions can directly affect the entire fieldwork schedule.

During our discussion, Mr. Chen was already clear about why he wanted a bladder pump.

His project required low-disturbance groundwater sampling, with particular attention to VOCs.

However, his main concern was not whether a bladder pump could bring water to the surface.

It was:

Could the pump provide stable and continuous water discharge when sampling from a deep well?

Based on his previous understanding of the market, many conventional bladder pumps perform reasonably well in shallow wells. However, as sampling depth increases, the discharge rate can decrease and the water may come out intermittently.

For projects that require long periods of low-flow sampling, this can become a practical fieldwork problem.

So, during this purchase, Mr. Chen was mainly concerned about:

Stable water discharge at greater depths

Long-term operation at low flow rates

Whether the discharge would become intermittent

Flow-rate control

Compatibility with actual monitoring-well conditions

That is the main issue we want to document in this case study.

2. Why Are Bladder Pumps Suitable for Groundwater VOCs Sampling?

Before discussing the equipment itself, it is important to understand why bladder pumps are commonly used for groundwater VOCs sampling.

VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, can be sensitive to disturbance during sampling.

Therefore, groundwater VOCs sampling is not simply a matter of removing water from a monitoring well. The sampling process needs to consider disturbance, flow rate, water-level changes, sample preservation, and other factors that can affect sample quality.

China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued HJ 1019-2019, Technical Guidelines for Sampling of Soil and Groundwater at Contaminated Sites, a national environmental protection standard covering VOC sampling from soil and groundwater.

One important characteristic of a bladder pump is its method of moving water.

The bladder is pressurized to displace the groundwater sample, while the compressed air does not directly enter the groundwater sample.

In simple terms, the operating cycle is:

Water enters → the bladder is pressurized → the sample is displaced upward → air is released → the bladder refills → the next cycle begins.

The compressed air and groundwater sample remain separated during this process.

This is one of the reasons bladder pumps are used for low-disturbance groundwater sampling.

China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment also identifies bladder pumps and low-flow submersible pumps as preferred options for collecting groundwater samples for VOC analysis, with the sampling flow rate controlled at no more than 0.3 L/min in the relevant technical guidance.

However, there is an important distinction:

A bladder pump cannot, by itself, guarantee accurate VOC test results.

The sampling device is only one part of the overall quality-control process.

Monitoring-well conditions, well development and purging, groundwater-level changes, sampling flow rate, sample preservation, transportation, and laboratory analysis can all affect the final results.

HJ 164-2020, Technical Specification for Groundwater Environmental Monitoring, also covers groundwater monitoring wells, sample collection and preservation, quality assurance, and quality control.

Therefore, a more accurate statement is:

The operating principle of a bladder pump helps reduce disturbance during groundwater sampling, making it a commonly used option for low-disturbance applications such as groundwater VOCs sampling.

3. Why Does a Bladder Pump Produce Intermittent Water Discharge?

This was Mr. Chen’s main concern.

One characteristic of a conventional bladder pump is that it operates through a repeated cycle.

The basic process can be understood as:

Pressurize → displace water → release pressure → refill → repeat.

One cycle produces one discharge event.

Therefore, intermittent discharge is inherent to the operating principle of many conventional bladder pumps.

In shallow wells, with shorter tubing and less demanding flow requirements, the intermittent nature may not be particularly noticeable.

As the sampling depth increases, however, operating conditions become more demanding.

Air pressure, tubing losses, well depth, and cycle control can all affect the actual performance of the pump.

If the cycle becomes longer, the field operator may observe:

Lower discharge rate → longer intervals between discharge → longer overall sampling time.

This is why two bladder pumps can have very different field performance even if they appear similar on a specification sheet.

In our view, evaluating a bladder pump should not be limited to one question:

“How deep can it pump?”

A more useful question is:

“Can it maintain the required flow rate consistently at the actual sampling depth?”

This becomes particularly important when low-flow groundwater sampling is required.

4. Why Do Deep Wells Expose Bladder Pump Limitations More Clearly?

Many mainstream bladder pumps currently available on the market, including several common Chinese models and typical imported configurations, have rated sampling depths in the 60- to 70-meter range.

Relevant technical documentation indicates that the general sampling depth for bladder pumps is typically less than 150 m.

However, two concepts should not be confused:

The general application range stated in a technical specification is not the same as the maximum pumping head of a specific pump.

The actual depth at which a pump can operate reliably depends on factors such as the air supply, pneumatic system, pump design, cycle control, tubing, and well conditions.

As depth increases, the requirements placed on the sampling system also increase.

If the cycle becomes significantly longer at greater depths, the result may be:

Longer intervals between discharge

Lower actual flow rates

Greater flow-rate fluctuations

Longer sampling times

More frequent manual adjustments by field personnel

This is exactly what Mr. Chen described:

“The water comes out too slowly and intermittently.”

5. How Does the AML919 Address the Intermittent-Discharge Problem?

After understanding Mr. Chen’s requirements, we introduced the AML919 Groundwater Bladder Pump.

The AML919 specifications are as follows:

Item

Specification

Applicable standards

HJ 1019-2019, HJ 164-2020

Pumping head

70 m standard; can reach 300 m or higher according to requirements

Water discharge

Water output in an average of 3 minutes, with continuous and stable discharge

Minimum flow rate

Long-term stable operation at flow rates as low as 100 mL/min

Pump body

316 stainless steel; diameter ≤45 mm; length <55 cm

Sample inlet/outlet

Bottom intake; PTFE/Teflon sample tubing; bladder can be replaced quickly by hand

Control

Automatic/manual flow-rate adjustment, real-time digital display, and drawdown-control interface

Accessories

Meter-marked steel-wire cable and winch, stainless-steel well-wall bracket; integrated controller and air pump

Among these specifications, three features are particularly relevant to Mr. Chen’s requirements.

5.1 Continuous and Stable Water Discharge

The AML919 is specified to provide water output in an average of 3 minutes, with continuous and stable discharge.

This is designed to address the intermittent discharge commonly encountered with conventional bladder pumps.

However, we do not believe that “faster discharge” should automatically be considered better.

For groundwater VOCs sampling, the more important issue is:

Maintaining a stable flow rate appropriate for the sampling requirements, rather than simply maximizing flow.

5.2 Long-Term Operation at 100 mL/min

The AML919 can operate continuously for extended periods at flow rates as low as 100 mL/min.

This capability is relevant to low-flow groundwater sampling applications.

Relevant Chinese environmental sampling guidance states that bladder pumps or low-flow submersible pumps are preferred for collecting groundwater samples for VOC analysis, with the sampling flow rate controlled at no more than 0.3 L/min, or 300 mL/min.

Therefore, the AML919’s 100 mL/min minimum stable flow-rate specification has a clear connection to low-flow sampling applications.

However:

100 mL/min is the equipment’s minimum stable operating capability, not a mandatory flow rate for every VOCs sampling project.

The actual sampling flow rate should be determined according to project requirements, well conditions, and the applicable technical standards.

5.3 Drawdown Control

The AML919 is equipped with a drawdown-control interface that can be connected to a groundwater three-level water-level meter.

If drawdown exceeds the preset value, the system can trigger a pause. Once the water level recovers, sampling can automatically resume.

For low-flow sampling projects where groundwater-level changes need to be controlled, this can reduce the need for repeated manual intervention in the field.

6. AML919 Pumping Depth, Materials, and Dimensions

In addition to discharge stability, the pump’s dimensions and materials are also important when selecting groundwater sampling equipment.

The AML919 pump body is made of 316 stainless steel, with a diameter of ≤45 mm and a length of <55 cm.

The sample tubing is made of PTFE/Teflon material, and the pump uses bottom intake.

The bladder can be replaced quickly by hand, which can simplify field maintenance.

The standard pumping head of the AML919 is:

70 m.

Depending on the actual requirements, it can be configured to:

300 m or higher.

There is an important point to clarify here:

300 m is not the standard configuration.

A pumping head of 300 m or higher is a customized configuration.

Therefore, if the monitoring well is deeper than 70 m, the customer should provide the actual well depth and relevant site conditions before placing an order so that the appropriate configuration can be confirmed.

We do not recommend looking only at the “300 m” figure and assuming:

“Every AML919 can be used directly at 300 m.”

That would not be a technically accurate way to select groundwater sampling equipment.

Actual well depth, well diameter, screen length, water conditions, sand content, and sampling requirements should all be considered before selecting the configuration.

7. Why Did Mr. Chen Consider the AML919 Despite the Price?

After reviewing the specifications, Mr. Chen felt that the AML919 was technically suitable for his requirements.

Then another issue came up:

The price was above his original budget.

That is a normal consideration in equipment purchasing.

A bladder pump is not automatically the right choice simply because it has more features, and not every groundwater sampling project requires a high-end configuration.

Our discussion with Mr. Chen focused on the actual application.

If a project involves ordinary groundwater sampling without demanding requirements for low-disturbance sampling, flow control, or long-term operation, then price should naturally be an important consideration.

But when a project involves:

VOCs sampling

Low-disturbance groundwater sampling

Low-flow control

Deep-well sampling

Continuous operation across multiple monitoring wells

then equipment stability, repeatability, and field efficiency also need to be considered.

Bladder pumps themselves are more complex than simpler groundwater sampling devices.

They need to address gas-water separation, flow control, depth adaptation, pump materials, and field maintenance.

So we did not tell Mr. Chen:

“Our product is the cheapest.”

Instead, we explained what the equipment could do, what it could not do, and why the price was different.

In the end, Mr. Chen decided to:

Submit the AML919 solution and quotation for internal consideration.

That is the actual result we can confirm from this case at this stage.

We do not describe this as a completed “successful project” or claim a specific improvement in sampling efficiency because we do not have verified post-delivery data.

For a technical case study, we believe it is better to report confirmed facts than to add impressive but unverified results.

8. Who Is the AML919 Suitable For?

This is an important part of equipment selection.

A professional sampling system should not only explain its advantages. It should also make clear:

Where it is suitable and where additional evaluation is required.

Potential Applications

The AML919 may be suitable for:

Groundwater VOCs sampling

Low-disturbance groundwater sampling

Low-flow groundwater sampling

Deep-well groundwater sampling

Projects requiring stable long-term flow rates

Projects requiring drawdown control

Environmental monitoring organizations

Third-party environmental testing laboratories

Contaminated-site investigation and groundwater monitoring projects

Conditions Requiring Evaluation Before Purchase

Additional evaluation is recommended when:

The monitoring well is significantly deeper than 70 m

A pumping head of 300 m or higher is required

The well contains a high level of suspended sand

The screen section is relatively long

The well diameter is large

Stable air and electrical power are not available on site

The project has strict requirements for flow rate or sampling time

In other words:

The AML919 is not a universal pump for every groundwater well.

The correct approach is to understand the well conditions first and then select the appropriate configuration.

9. Five Questions to Answer Before Buying a Groundwater Bladder Pump

When customers are considering a groundwater bladder pump, we recommend confirming the following information first.

1. How deep is the monitoring well?

The configuration may be different for wells within 70 m and wells deeper than 70 m.

If a pumping head of 300 m or higher is required, a customized configuration should be discussed in advance.

2. What is the internal diameter of the monitoring well?

Pump diameter, pump length, and other well components can affect actual installation and operation.

The AML919 pump body has a diameter of ≤45 mm.

3. Is the equipment being used for VOCs sampling?

If VOCs are the primary target, attention should be given to low-disturbance sampling, flow-rate control, and sample handling rather than simply comparing maximum flow rates.

4. What sampling flow rate is required?

The AML919 can operate stably for extended periods at flow rates as low as 100 mL/min.

However, the actual flow rate should be determined according to the project requirements.

5. Does the well contain significant sand?

If the well has a high sand content, this should be evaluated before purchase.

Sand can accelerate wear on check valves and other components.

These questions may appear simple, but they are often more useful than simply asking:

“How deep can your bladder pump go?”

10. What Can the AML919 Not Do?

To avoid presenting the product as a universal solution, we also want to clearly explain its limitations.

The standard pumping head is 70 m

Applications deeper than 70 m require evaluation and potentially a customized configuration.

A pumping head of 300 m or higher is a customized configuration.

It requires an air supply and electrical power

A bladder pump relies on air pressure to operate, so an appropriate air source is required.

Electrical power is also required for field operation.

This is a characteristic of the bladder pump operating principle, rather than a limitation unique to the AML919.

Special well conditions can still affect purging time

Long screens, large-diameter wells, slow groundwater recharge, and other site conditions may increase the time required for well purging.

Stable pump discharge does not mean that every monitoring well can be purged quickly.

High-sand-content wells require evaluation

Sand can increase wear on check valves and other components.

High-sand-content wells should therefore be evaluated before selecting the equipment configuration.

Product specifications are not the same as performance under every field condition

The specifications in this case study refer to the AML919 standard configuration or actual product specifications.

Actual performance may vary depending on production batch, customized configuration, sampling depth, and field conditions.

If a project has strict requirements for sampling depth, flow rate, or discharge time, we recommend conducting a test under the customer’s actual monitoring-well conditions before purchase.

Testing under real well conditions is more meaningful than simply comparing the maximum specifications listed on a product sheet.

11. Frequently Asked Questions About Groundwater Bladder Pumps

Q1: Why are bladder pumps suitable for groundwater VOCs sampling?

A bladder pump uses a flexible bladder to displace the groundwater sample, while compressed air does not directly enter the groundwater sample.

This helps reduce disturbance during the sampling process.

HJ 1019-2019, issued by China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, provides technical requirements for VOC sampling at contaminated sites. Relevant groundwater sampling guidance also identifies bladder pumps and low-flow submersible pumps as preferred options for collecting groundwater samples for VOC analysis.

Q2: Why does a bladder pump produce intermittent discharge?

The operating principle of a conventional bladder pump is based on repeated cycles:

Pressurize → displace water → release pressure → refill.

One cycle produces one discharge event, so intermittent discharge is inherent in the operating principle.

The degree of intermittency can also be affected by sampling depth, pneumatic-system design, cycle control, tubing, and well conditions.

Q3: How deep can a bladder pump typically sample?

Many mainstream bladder pumps have rated sampling depths in the 60- to 70-meter range.

Relevant technical documentation indicates that the general sampling depth for bladder pumps is typically less than 150 m.

However, this should not be treated as the maximum depth of every individual pump.

The AML919 has a standard pumping head of 70 m and can be customized to 300 m or higher according to actual requirements.

For deep-well projects, the actual well depth and site conditions should be confirmed before selecting the configuration.

Q4: Why can the AML919 provide continuous and stable discharge?

The AML919 is designed with the goal of improving discharge stability and addressing the intermittent discharge commonly encountered with conventional bladder pumps.

According to its product specifications, the AML919 provides water output in an average of 3 minutes, with continuous and stable discharge.

It can also operate stably for extended periods at flow rates as low as 100 mL/min.

Actual performance may vary depending on sampling depth, well conditions, and the specific equipment configuration.

Q5: Is 100 mL/min the standard flow rate for VOCs sampling?

No.

100 mL/min is the AML919’s minimum stable operating capability. It is not a mandatory sampling flow rate for every VOCs project.

Relevant Chinese technical guidance states that bladder pumps or low-flow submersible pumps are preferred for groundwater VOCs sampling, with the sampling flow rate controlled at no more than 0.3 L/min, or 300 mL/min.

The actual sampling flow rate should be determined according to the specific project and applicable technical requirements.

Q6: Can the AML919 be used directly in a 300-meter-deep well?

Not necessarily.

The AML919 has a standard pumping head of 70 m.

A pumping head of 300 m or higher requires a customized configuration.

If the monitoring well is close to or deeper than 300 m, the customer should provide the actual well depth, well diameter, and relevant site conditions so that the appropriate configuration can be confirmed.

Q7: Can a bladder pump guarantee accurate VOCs test results?

No.

A bladder pump can help reduce disturbance during sample collection, but the reliability of the final analytical result also depends on well purging, groundwater levels, sampling flow rate, sample preservation, transportation, and laboratory analysis.

HJ 164-2020 covers groundwater sample collection and preservation, quality assurance, and quality control.

Therefore:

A bladder pump is an important part of a high-quality groundwater sampling process, but it is not the only factor determining analytical accuracy.

Q8: Is a bladder pump worth the higher price compared with a bailer?

It depends on the project.

For basic groundwater sampling where low-disturbance sampling, flow control, and continuous operation are not major requirements, a bailer may offer advantages such as simple construction and lower cost.

For projects involving VOCs, low-flow sampling, deep wells, or long periods of stable operation, a bladder pump may provide greater practical value.

The equipment should therefore be selected according to the sampling requirements rather than purchase price alone.

12. What This Case Really Tells Us About Groundwater Sampling

Mr. Chen’s initial concern was straightforward:

“The bladder pump discharges water too slowly, and the flow is intermittent.”

But from an equipment perspective, this is not simply a matter of pump flow rate.

It involves several factors:

Sampling depth, pneumatic pressure, cycle control, low-flow stability, well conditions, and field operation.

Bladder pumps are commonly used for low-disturbance groundwater sampling because their operating principle keeps compressed air from directly entering the groundwater sample.

At the same time, the cyclic operating principle creates a practical challenge: maintaining stable and continuous water discharge.

This is the problem the AML919 is designed to address.

According to the product specifications, the AML919 provides:

70 m standard pumping head

Up to 300 m or higher with customized configuration

Water output in an average of 3 minutes

Continuous and stable water discharge

Long-term stable operation at flow rates as low as 100 mL/min

316 stainless-steel pump body

Pump diameter ≤45 mm

Pump length <55 cm

Drawdown-control interface

Automatic/manual flow-rate adjustment and real-time digital display

At the same time, its limitations should be understood:

70 m is the standard configuration; 300 m or higher requires customization. The system requires an air source and electrical power. Special well conditions can still affect field performance, and high-sand-content wells require evaluation before use.

That is why we chose to document this case.

We do not want to turn a real equipment case into a marketing story in which every specification sounds perfect and every field problem disappears.

For professional groundwater sampling equipment, useful information should answer four basic questions:

What problem did the customer have?

Why did the problem occur?

What did the equipment actually address?

What limitations still need to be considered?

For this case, the confirmed outcome is that Mr. Chen decided to submit the AML919 solution and quotation for consideration.

We do not add unverified claims about efficiency improvements or final project results.

For professional sampling equipment, accurate specifications, realistic application boundaries, and a clear understanding of the customer’s actual requirements are more valuable than an impressive but unverifiable success story.

Bladder Pump Groundwater Sampling Case: Solving Intermittent Discharge in Deep Wells Customer: Environmental Monitoring Station in Guangxi, ChinaContact: Mr. ChenApplication: Groundwater VOCs samplingEquipment: AML919 Groundwater Bladder PumpStandard pumping head: 70 mCustomized pumping head: Up to 300 m or higherMinimum stable flow rate: 100 mL/minCustomer’s main concern: Slow and intermittent water discharge during deep-well sampling 1.
