The well was located in Hebei, while Mr. Chen was in Henan. Our engineer operated the equipment on site and recorded downhole footage with depth markers, then sent the video to Mr. Chen for remote well-condition assessment. Through the footage, he could directly check the condition of screen sections, filter pipes, and the well wall at different depths, and based on this, decided to submit AML921 for procurement.

This communication also made a long-standing problem particularly clear: traditional analog downhole cameras face not only limitations in video transmission distance and interference resistance during deep-well inspections, but also issues such as the inability to synchronously record well-depth information, difficulty in remotely reviewing footage, and dependence on professional personnel at the inspection site.

This article uses this actual demonstration as an example to break down several common problems mentioned by Mr. Chen, while also explaining what AML921 can solve and what its current technical limitations are.

1. A Well-Condition Assessment Completed Remotely

Mr. Chen is an engineer at an environmental monitoring station in Henan and had previously contacted us several times regarding downhole camera equipment.

During this demonstration, our engineer operated the equipment downhole and recorded information such as well depth and time simultaneously. Unlike ordinary video, AML921 can record the downhole image together with depth information, producing downhole footage with depth markers.

Therefore, what Mr. Chen received was not simply a section of ordinary video without a clear location reference, but a downhole inspection record that could be correlated with specific depths.

For example:

What was the condition of the screen at 140 meters?

Was there any abnormality in the filter pipe at 200 meters?

Were there obvious fractures, broken sections, or blockages in the well wall at a particular depth?

These questions can all be assessed together with the depth information shown in the video.

For environmental monitoring, groundwater monitoring, and hydrogeological inspection projects that require remote collaboration, the value of this recording method is that experts do not necessarily have to travel to the site every time. They can first conduct a preliminary assessment remotely using footage with depth information and then decide whether further on-site work is necessary.

After the demonstration, Mr. Chen said that he would include AML921 in the procurement application. What particularly interested him was that the footage could be saved, transmitted remotely, and reviewed according to depth.

2. Three Common Problems with Traditional Downhole Cameras

During the discussion, Mr. Chen summarized three common problems they had experienced when using analog-signal downhole cameras in the past.

1. Experts need to be on site

Traditional operations often require professional personnel to be physically present to view the real-time output from the equipment.

If the well is far away, this involves personnel coordination, transportation, and on-site scheduling. If the expert’s schedule cannot be coordinated, the inspection process may also be delayed.

If downhole footage can be fully recorded and includes accurate depth information, it can first be reviewed and internally assessed remotely.

2. Transmission problems can occur in deep wells

As well depth increases, video signals may be affected by attenuation, noise, and bandwidth limitations during long-distance transmission through cables.

For analog video, these effects are generally more noticeable and may appear as:

Increased image noise;

Reduced image clarity;

Image interference;

Unstable signals;

Repeated adjustments or additional operations during deep-well inspections.

Therefore, one of the key issues with deep-well inspection equipment is not simply whether the camera is clear enough, but also whether the downhole video can be transmitted stably to the surface unit.

3. The equipment may deteriorate after extended use

Downhole inspection equipment operates in an environment that is completely different from ordinary ground-level camera equipment.

During actual operation, factors such as water pressure, water corrosion, temperature changes, and cable friction need to be considered.

If the equipment’s sealing, corrosion resistance, and structural design cannot adapt to actual operating conditions, problems such as water ingress, connector corrosion, and sealing failure may occur, increasing maintenance costs.

These three problems correspond to three technical aspects:

Whether the footage can be retained for review, whether the signal can be transmitted stably, and whether the equipment can adapt to the downhole environment.

3. Why Are Traditional Analog Videos Subject to Transmission Limitations in Deep Wells?

When interference appears in deep-well video, many people initially assume that “the camera quality is not good enough.”

In reality, the problem may occur earlier in the process—whether the video signal is compatible with the transmission medium.

Traditional analog video signals have relatively high bandwidth requirements. Taking a typical analog video baseband signal as an example, its frequency band can reach approximately 6 MHz.

At the same time, the high-frequency transmission capability of ordinary logging cables is limited. Public research on logging cables indicates that, under long-distance cable conditions, the available communication bandwidth may be only slightly above 100 kHz, while signal attenuation increases significantly as frequency rises.

This means:

The problem may not be that the camera cannot capture a clear image, but that a significant amount of useful information may already have been lost during transmission.

Therefore, traditional analog video systems often require specialized transmission designs, such as cable solutions suitable for high-bandwidth video transmission.

Digital downhole cameras take a different approach: the image is first acquired and digitized downhole, and the digital video is then transmitted to the surface through an appropriate transmission method.

The core differences between the two solutions can be summarized as follows:

Comparison

Analog Video Solution

Digital Video Solution

Signal format

Continuous analog video signal

Digitized video signal

Bandwidth requirements

Relatively high

Encoding can reduce the bandwidth required for transmission

Long-distance transmission

More susceptible to attenuation and noise

Generally provides better interference resistance and transmission management

Image storage

Usually requires additional recording equipment

More suitable for direct digital storage

File copying

May involve losses during analog duplication

Digital files are convenient for copying, transmission, and archiving

Depth information

Depends on system design

Easier to synchronize and record together with video data

It should be noted that digital signals are not “completely immune to attenuation.” As cable distances continue to increase, digital transmission still needs to take cable characteristics, signal quality, power supply, and system design into consideration.

The real advantage of a digital solution is that digital processing reduces the dependence of video transmission on physical bandwidth while making storage, transmission, retrieval, and subsequent analysis more convenient.

4. Why Does the Downhole Environment Affect Camera Service Life?

Downhole inspection equipment and ordinary ground-level camera equipment operate in completely different environments.

During actual use, the following factors need to be considered:

Water pressure;

Water corrosion;

Temperature changes;

Mud and turbidity;

Cable tension;

Equipment sealing;

Connector protection.

Therefore, the reliability of a downhole camera should not be evaluated solely by camera resolution. It is also necessary to consider housing material, protection rating, operating temperature, and maximum working depth.

For AML921, the product design parameters include:

316 stainless steel probe housing;

IP68 protection rating;

Operating temperature: -25°C to 60°C;

Maximum working depth: 500 meters.

Compared with ordinary 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel offers better corrosion resistance. For equipment that is in prolonged contact with water environments, it can serve as one material option for structural protection.

Of course, equipment specifications do not mean that on-site maintenance can be ignored.

During actual operations, appropriate well washing, cleaning, equipment rinsing, and dry storage should still be carried out according to the well conditions. For wells with high levels of sediment or turbidity, it is particularly important to control site conditions in advance.

5. What Are the Features of the AML921 Downhole Camera?

According to the product specifications of AML921, its main features focus on dual-view observation, depth marking, digital image recording, and adaptability to downhole environments.

1. Downward View + 360° Panoramic View Dual Cameras

AML921 uses a combination of downward and 360° panoramic views, with a camera resolution of 2 megapixels.

The two views perform different observation tasks:

Downward view:
Primarily used to observe conditions at the bottom of the well, such as sediment and fallen objects.

360° panoramic view:
Primarily used to observe the well wall, fractures, screen blockage, filter-pipe conditions, and localized deformation.

The panoramic view uses a single CCD combined with a 360° ring lens for imaging, rather than stitching together images from multiple cameras.

Therefore, during a single descent into the well, information from both the bottom and the well wall can be obtained, reducing the need to frequently replace the probe.

2. Probe Diameter ≤50 mm

The AML921 probe uses a 316 stainless steel structure, with a probe diameter of ≤50 mm and an overall length of approximately 50 cm.

For applications such as environmental monitoring wells and groundwater monitoring wells, probe dimensions are one of the key parameters to consider when selecting equipment.

According to the relevant requirements of HJ 164—2020, monitoring wells generally need to meet corresponding access conditions for equipment. Therefore, before actual use, it is still necessary to confirm whether the equipment can be smoothly lowered based on the well opening size, well-pipe structure, and site conditions.

3. Composite Cable with Meter Markings

AML921 comes standard with a 100-meter cable and has a maximum working depth of 500 meters.

If the project depth exceeds the standard configuration, the cable can be customized according to the actual well depth. For example, for a 260-meter-deep project in northwest China, a 300-meter cable was customized.

A load-bearing steel wire rope is integrated inside the cable, and the cable also has meter markings. Therefore, the equipment depth can be directly read during descent.

This is particularly important for well-condition records.

Because once an abnormality is discovered, it is not enough to know “what was found.” It is also necessary to know:

At what depth did the abnormality occur?

4. Video Recording and Report Output

AML921 supports downhole video recording and export and can generate assessment reports with depth markers.

Data can be exported through Bluetooth, USB, and other methods.

The equipment adopts a portable design and is equipped with a mobile power supply and built-in printer. When site conditions and safety requirements permit, this can reduce the need for complex on-site equipment configurations, making it convenient for a single operator to complete equipment lowering, observation, and cable retrieval.

6. What Do Experts Actually Need to See?

If the purpose is simply to “record what is inside the well,” there is not much obvious difference between a downhole camera and an ordinary imaging device.

What truly determines the value of downhole footage for well-condition assessment is whether the footage can form a complete inspection record.

For a digital downhole camera such as AML921, the inspection results are mainly reflected in three aspects.

First, the footage contains depth coordinates

Information such as well depth and time can be synchronously overlaid on the footage.

For example, if an abnormal screen condition is discovered, it can be clearly recorded at a specific depth rather than simply being saved as a video without a location reference.

Second, the footage can be stored digitally

Digital video is convenient to store, copy, transmit, and review again.

For projects such as environmental monitoring and groundwater monitoring that require record retention, the original footage can be retrieved later for review without having to return to the well.

Third, traceable inspection materials can be generated

Footage with depth markers, original video, and assessment reports can together form a project archive.

This allows the corresponding well depth to be directly identified during subsequent acceptance, review, or technical communication.

Therefore, the value of a downhole camera is not simply “being able to see inside the well,” but rather transforming downhole observations into inspection materials that can be located, stored, and reviewed.

7. What Can AML921 Not Do?

Every downhole camera has its applicable range, and AML921 is no exception.

Understanding the equipment’s limitations helps avoid incorrect equipment selection.

1. The standard cable is 100 meters

If the inspection well is deeper than 100 meters, the cable needs to be customized according to the actual well depth.

For deeper wells, cable length, load-bearing capacity, power supply, and signal stability also need to be considered comprehensively.

2. It currently does not provide well-deviation measurement

AML921 is currently mainly designed for downhole image observation and recording. The well-deviation measurement function is still under development.

If a project requires well deviation, azimuth, or other parameters, corresponding measurement equipment needs to be configured separately.

3. Imaging has limitations in highly turbid environments

The equipment has a specified turbidity tolerance of 50 NTU.

As turbidity increases, light scattering in the water becomes more significant, and the ability to identify small structures also decreases.

Therefore, a downhole camera cannot replace on-site well washing and well-condition preparation. Proper well cleaning and sediment control before inspection are equally important for final image quality.

4. It cannot replace core sampling

A downhole camera is suitable for observing macroscopic structures in the well, such as fractures, broken zones, screen blockage, and filter-pipe deformation.

However, information such as mineral composition and rock mechanical properties cannot be accurately obtained through video alone. Such testing still requires core sampling and laboratory analysis.

8. Frequently Asked Questions About Downhole Cameras

Q1: What is the difference between an analog downhole camera and a digital downhole camera?

One of the core differences lies in how the video signal is processed and transmitted.

Analog video requires relatively high transmission bandwidth and is more susceptible to attenuation and noise under long-distance logging cable conditions. A digital downhole camera can perform digital processing downhole and transmit encoded digital signals while also making video storage, copying, and remote transmission more convenient.

Q2: Why does a downhole camera need depth markers?

Because downhole inspection requires not only knowing “what was found,” but also knowing “at what depth it occurred.”

For example:

Screen blockage detected at 140 meters;
Abnormal filter-pipe condition detected at 200 meters.

With depth information, the relevant location can be accurately reviewed and identified later.

For environmental monitoring wells, groundwater monitoring wells, and hydrogeological investigation projects, depth information is also an important part of creating traceable inspection records.

Q3: Can a downhole camera be viewed remotely?

Yes, but the specific capability depends on whether the equipment supports video recording and data export.

If the equipment can synchronously save downhole footage and depth information, the inspection files can be transmitted to technical personnel who are not on site for remote assessment.

AML921 supports video recording and data export, making it suitable for application scenarios that require remote collaboration and data retention.

Q4: How deep can AML921 go?

AML921 has a maximum working depth of 500 meters.

The standard configuration includes a 100-meter cable. If the project depth exceeds the standard length, the cable can be customized according to the actual well depth.

Q5: Can a downhole camera be used in very turbid water?

Yes, but image quality will be affected by turbidity.

AML921 has a specified turbidity tolerance of 50 NTU. As turbidity increases, light scattering becomes more significant, reducing visibility and making it more difficult to identify fine structures.

Therefore, well washing and sediment control are recommended before formal inspection.

Q6: Can a downhole camera replace core sampling?

No.

A downhole camera is mainly used to observe the well wall and internal structures. It can identify macroscopic features such as fractures, broken zones, screen blockage, and filter-pipe deformation.

However, information such as mineral composition and rock mechanical properties cannot be accurately obtained through downhole video alone. These tests still require core sampling and laboratory analysis.

Q7: What parameters should be considered when selecting a downhole camera?

It is recommended to focus on the following parameters according to actual well conditions:

Maximum working depth

Probe diameter

Video resolution

Whether depth marking is supported

Cable length and load-bearing capacity

Protection rating

Operating temperature range

Adaptability to water turbidity

Whether footage can be exported and stored

Whether inspection reports can be generated

Compared with simply comparing camera pixel counts, these parameters are more directly related to whether the equipment can be used for a specific well condition.

9. Conclusion: The Value of Downhole Cameras Is Moving from “Seeing” to “Recording and Reviewing”

Mr. Chen’s remote assessment needs demonstrate that modern downhole inspection is no longer focused solely on whether the inside of the well can be seen.

More importantly, it is about:

whether images can be obtained stably, whether they can be accurately correlated with well depth, whether the original materials can be stored, whether they can be transmitted remotely, and whether they can be reviewed again later.

This is also an important difference between digital downhole cameras and traditional analog solutions.

For environmental monitoring wells, groundwater monitoring wells, hydrogeological investigations, and other projects that require observation inside wells, equipment selection should not focus solely on “clarity.” Instead, it should take into account well depth, well diameter, water quality, turbidity, cable length, data recording methods, and the actual inspection objectives.

AML921 is currently mainly intended for downhole image observation, depth recording, and retention of inspection materials. If a project additionally requires well-deviation measurement, core analysis, or other specialized parameter measurements, corresponding equipment is still required.

For specific projects, the final equipment configuration should be determined based on the actual well depth, well diameter, water quality conditions, and inspection requirements.

Abstract:Last week, Mr. Chen, an engineer from an environmental monitoring station in Henan, contacted us for an equipment demonstration.
